When reflecting back on his early years, Suaste states that his involvement with music was always something infused in his background and upbringing. “My mom says I came out of the womb singing”, he laughs. Growing up with four other siblings in a small community in Salt Lake City, Jordan stood out from the bunch with his natural ability as a songwriter and vocalist. Keeping a lyric journal close to him, he started writing down ideas for songs in early elementary school, finding solace and healing in the practice.
Feeling dissatisfied with the educational system, Jordan decided to drop out of high-school after turning sixteen. Still able to receive his GED, he started working as an esthetician and carving out a distinct path for his future, gaining significant work experience in the process. “In high-school, there’s not as much respect as a lot of kids deserve”, he reflects. “The reason so many people drop out or don’t finish high-school is [because] the system is not built to help everyone.” While life after school wasn’t always smooth sailing, Jordan remained determined to focus on his desires and goals, even though the pandemic and COVID-19 interrupted much of his ability to work and perform.
Yet with the inevitability of life’s challenges and hurdles came emotional and financial struggles, especially after leaving Capitol Records and becoming homeless for a stint of time in 2021. Needing to find roommates and going through several housing transitions, Suaste states with a slight laugh, “the whole starving artist thing is so real.” Rather than giving up on his dream, Suaste continued to hold his head high and face his challenges with grace. Taking self-care into serious consideration, Suaste consciously put boundaries around his online and offline life, placing emphasis on his in-person friendships and finding uplifting encouragement from musicians and friends in L.A. “It was a weird thing in my brain”, he emphasizes. “I don’t think anyone is meant to process that much information”, referring to social media platforms and all its rapidly generated comments and likes that they entail. “Now I’m at a point where if I didn’t care about music and I didn’t want to make music, I wouldn’t do it.” Yet it’s clear to see that Suaste’s passion and drive comes from deep within, providing the space to share his voice and words with those around him.
