Spoken Word? Hip Hop? Jazz? Motivational Speaker?
The only title I prefer to use for myself is "artist". You decide.

When Christopher Owens started writing creatively at the age of 6 in Saginaw, Michigan, he didn’t know he would become nationally recognized spoken word artist and multiple slam champion Truth B. Told. Crowned by various media outlets as a “Superpoet,” the 2010 National Poetry Award winner recently added KFC, a division of Yum! Brands, Inc., to his list of fans. KFC selected Truth to perform his poem, “Destiny,” in commercials airing throughout Black History Month for its annual Pride 360° campaign. Truth’s fan base should swell exponentially in spring 2011, when he stars as a featured performer on the BET Black College Tour, sponsored by Black Entertainment Television network.

Prior to his ascension to the national stage, Truth was sharpening his lyrical sword on the ears of audiences in Louisville, KY, where he has lived since 2003. He started with other Louisville poets in small coffee shops, but his unique style stood out. Blurring the lines between conscious hip hop, poetry, neo-soul and inspirational music, Truth’s lyrics and style defy the limitations of categorization. He’s opened for Mint Condition, Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal and Dwele, among others. Whether he performs at black-tie events, night clubs, coffee shops, rock concert halls or churches, Truth consistently delivers work the audience embraces—not surprising for someone whose favorite musicians range from Bach to Gil Scott Herron.

Truth has released two spoken word albums to critical acclaim: Lyrical Therapy Volume 1 (2009) and Lyrical Therapy Volume 2: The Death and Rebirth of Christopher Owens, Parts 1 and 2
(2010). The final installment of the Lyrical Therapy trilogy is due later this year.
